PARIS, 14 MARCH 2019

This year, with a focus on “Innovation to impact”, the Annual Meeting of the Society for Reproductive Investigation (SRI) focuses not only on innovation in basic research and translational medicine, but also, emphasizes the importance of the implementation of scientific advances to improve women’s reproductive health.

At this 66th Annual meeting in Paris, 12 IVIRMA studies were accepted for presentation, 8 in poster format and 4 as oral presentations. Of these, 4 studies led by IVIRMA researchers were recognized by Awards from the SRI.

“This year, the congress brings together more than 1,200 investigators to discuss the main issues affecting reproduction. This is the perfect forum for the exchange of knowledge and the materialization of new perspectives on how to optimize scientific progress in our field”, said Dr. Juan Antonio García-Velasco, Director of IVI Madrid.

The main topics addressed in IVIRMA studies are related to endometriosis, ovarian rejuvenation, embryo implantation and endometrial regeneration.

“We are aware of the importance of research in order to maintain progress in our field. We have a firm commitment to innovation. We know that only by promoting the study of new reproductive paradigms, we can offer the best treatment options to our patients. As always, our patients are our constant focus as the main driving force of our activity”, added Dr. Seli.

The study of a new progesterone receptor, received the highest award given by the SRI

The study titled “Novel non-classic progesterone (P4) receptor PGRMC1 interactions and functionality reveal a key role during the human decidualization process”, conducted by Dr. Stefania Salsano, an embryologist at IVI Bilbao, was the recipient of the President’s Plenary Award, the most prestigious prize awarded by the SRI; only four trainees receives this Award every year.

The award-winning research provides an in-depth analysis of a non-classical progesterone receptor called PGRMC1, of which very little is known until now.

“In this study, we were able to describe the function of the PGRMC1 receptor in the endometrium and we observed that it plays an important role in the process of decidualization – changes that occur in the endometrium that allow the implantation of the embryo in the uterus – a very important moment in pregnancy”, said Dr. Francisco Dominguez, a researcher at the IVI Foundation and leader and principal investigator of the study.

The three other studies to receive awards at SRI are “NGS of oocytes from endometriosis patients reveals a differential transcriptomic pattern” and “Association of Blood Cadmium and Lead Levels with Reproductive Lifespan Among Postmenopausal Women: NHANES 2005-2014”, both led by researchers from the IVI Foundation and winners of the Travel Award Grant, as well as the study “Mitochondrial DNA Copy Number in Trophectoderm is not a Predictive Biomarker”, led by Richard Scott III, who received the prestigious SRI-Pfizer President’s Presenter Award.
