In 2008, she was awarded an extraordinary doctorate degree by the University of Valencia for a work that described stem cells in the human and mouse endometrium. Her research group has recently developed therapeutic approaches using bioengineering and cell treatments to treat uterine and endometrial pathologies. She became a co-inventor of the patent ‘Stem Cell Therapy for Endometrial Pathologies’ in 2014, using stem cells to cure endometrial disorders.

Her work has been published in more than 60 articles in different scientific journals, such as Human Reproduction, Human Reproduction Update, PLoS ONE, Fertility and Sterility, Acta Biomaterialia etc. She has been responsible for the supervision of eight doctoral theses in the last 12 years. She has been involved in numerous national and international congresses (with over 80 accepted presentations) in the field of gynaecological research and has been recognized with several awards (President´s Presenter Award at the Annual Meeting of the Society for Reproductive Investigation /SRI in 2009 and 2023; and the Oral Presentation Basic Science Award in 2012 at the Annual Meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embriology/ESHRE). Dr. Cervelló has participated as Principal Investigator in competitive projects both as emerging researcher (Generalitat Valenciana), and as lead researcher (ISCIII Projects).

Irene holds the position of Professor and Coordinator in the Master’s Degree in Biotechnology of Assisted Human Reproduction at the University of Valencia. In 2013 and 2019, she collaborated as post-doctoral researcher in North America at the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine (5 months, Winston-Salem, North Caroline) and the Feinberg School of Medicine at the Northwestern University (4 months, Chicago, Illinois) been financed by the Ministry of Education (Spain). During 2023, she worked as a research collaborator at the Laboratory of Development of the Gonads at Université Paris Saclay for five months (granted by ISCIII).

Currently Dr. Cervelló serves as Membership & Nominations Committee member since 2023 for the Society for Reproductive Investigation (SRI) and as a ESHRE (European Society for Human Reproduction and Embriology) Committee of National Representative (CNR) for the 2023-2026 years.
