Infertilidad masculina
El factor masculino es uno de los responsables de los problemas de fertilidad en un 20% de las parejas y contribuye en el 30-40% de casos. Desde hace décadas, el espermiograma ha sido la herramienta clave para determinar la infertilidad masculina, sin embargo, la variabilidad en el recuento de espermatozoides, su movilidad y su morfología forman parte del enigma a la hora de decidir cómo optimizar los tratamientos de reproducción, entre los que se incluye la inseminación artificial y la fecundación in vitro, con o sin el uso de la inyección intracitoplasmática de espermatozoides.
Recientemente, los avances en el campo de la fragmentación de ADN han dado un empuje al estudio de otros parámetros para el análisis de la calidad del semen. Han surgido diversas cuestiones sobre el uso de dispositivos microfluídicos para aislar espermatozoides, así como otros factores epigenéticos que influyen en la calidad del semen y en la descendencia.
